Please join us online by Zoom, Wednesday evenings, 6:45-8:30pm. We value Sangha (spiritual community) and the opportunity to be together. We will use this time for lightly guided meditation, a short check in to see how we can support one another, and exploration of a Buddhist topic. The facilitator will offer brief remarks and guide discussion as a way to focus our practice on that week’s theme. Themes may run several weeks, but each week can serve as a stand-alone session. We look forward to seeing you and sharing our love and kindness for the wellness of all beings.

Beautiful Friendship

A four week series beginning 2/14/24

Perhaps we have all heard the very famous quote from the Kalyanamitta Sutta about spiritual friendship. Here the Buddha is recalling a conversation he had with his attendant Ananda who stated, “Sir, good friends, companions, and associates are half the spiritual life.” Then the Buddha replied, “Not so, Ānanda! Not so, Ānanda! Good friends, companions, and associates are the whole of the spiritual life.”

Sangharakshita emphasized the importance of spiritual friendship in our growth and development as individuals and as a spiritual community. He was known to say “There is no sangha without friendship. Friendship is the bedrock of the sangha.” It is often through other people that we get to know ourselves better and learn where we need to develop and how to do that. It is through friendship we can develop the skills of generosity, kindness, compassion, trust, forgiveness, clarity, and patience.

In this series we will explore how the Dharma is best ‘caught’, rather than ‘taught’, through both vertical and horizontal relationships. We will also have time to reflect on the importance of, and difficulties we may have with, friendship in our own lives. In some ways, particularly virtually and online, we may be very connected to others, but is this enough? What does it take to nourish a relationship so that it can grow into spiritual friendship, beautiful friendship, and a friendship that is forged on a mutual ‘love of the good’ that has an endurance to last through the ups and downs of life.

All are welcome!
