6:45 pm - 8:00 pm

Please join us online by Zoom, Wednesday evenings, 6:45-8:00pm. We value Sangha (spiritual community) and the opportunity to be together. We will use this time for lightly guided meditation, a short check in to see how we can support one another, and exploration of a Buddhist topic. The facilitator will offer brief remarks and guide discussion as a way to focus our practice on that week’s theme. Themes may run several weeks, but each week can serve as a stand-alone session. We look forward to seeing you and sharing our love and kindness for the wellness of all beings.

All are welcome!

Releasing the Hindrances

In our exploration of the hindrances in meditation and in daily life, this week we come to restlessness and anxiety. This one may be one of the most pervasive in our society today, one which moves with such speed from one thing to another, one task to another, one idea to another, one social media post after another. Everything is just one “swipe” or “click” away. Our attention is frittered away in small bursts, sound bites, and video clips. There is no time to be still, to follow a thought through, to allow our bodies and attention to come to stillness.

Participating in life in this way leads to restlessness and anxiety. We find a fidgety and hyper-active body, along with a mind that dashes into fears about all that may go wrong in the future, from finding a parking spot downtown to catastrophizing about the state of the world.

This week at sangha night we will reflect and look to see if this hindrance is present in us, if this speedy, fearful way of being is holding us back from growing towards a more open, wise and compassionate being. We will work with the antidotes to investigate what helps us recognize and dissolve restlessness and anxiety both in our daily life and during or meditation practice.
