We decided to continue not having in person meditation and study group sessions on Wednesday evening.

Instead we will be meeting online. Join us by clicking on this Zoom link on Wednesday evenings, 6:45-8:00pm . We value Sangha (spiritual community) and feel it is important for us to have the opportunity to be together. We will use this time to meditation along with a short check in to see how we can best support one another. Plus the facilitator will continue on our Dharma theme offering everyone a focus for our practice. We look forward to seeing you and sharing our love and kindness for the wellness of all beings.

Eight Verses For Training the Mind

The first three verses; setting a positive intention that includes all beings, practicing putting others before us, and observing the mind, will help support the solid roots needed when we experience the volatile winds of unskillful actions from others. With diligence and consistent steady efforts, we can enter a space where our ‘enemies’ become our most precious teachers.

Looking at the third verse:

In my every action, (of body speech and mind) I will watch my mind, and the moment destructive (unskillful) emotions arise, I will confront them strongly and avert them, since they will hurt me and others.

This practice is easy to understand, yet we may have an experience of just how difficult ‘watching the mind’ can be. The spirit of this verse is foundational to Buddhist practice and is reflected in many of the teachings, as well as other traditions.

One interpretation of the opening verses of the Dhammapada:

Mind is chief

Mind precedes all things

The person who thinks, speaks and acts with an unskillful mind, (based in greed, hatred and delusion)

Sorrow will follow them as the wheel of the ox cart

Follows the ox’s hoof.

The person who thinks, speaks and acts with a skillful mind, (based in kindness, generosity, and wisdom)

Happiness follows like a shadow that never departs.

Right Effort in the Noble Eightfold path:

Eradicate existing and arising unskillful mental states

Cultivate and maintain skillful mental states

A similar practice principle in recovery programs:

Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
