Date(s) - 06/12/2023
6:45 pm - 8:30 pm
Please join us online by Zoom, Wednesday evenings, 6:45-8:30pm. We value Sangha (spiritual community) and the opportunity to be together. We will use this time for lightly guided meditation, a short check in to see how we can support one another, and exploration of a Buddhist topic. The facilitator will offer brief remarks and guide discussion as a way to focus our practice on that week’s theme. Themes may run several weeks, but each week can serve as a stand-alone session. We look forward to seeing you and sharing our love and kindness for the wellness of all beings.
Wednesdays 6:45pm – 8:30pm
The Five Niyamas
This Wednesday we will continue on with the Five Niyamas, or modes of Dependent Origination as outlined in the Abhidamma. The Buddha taught that not all suffering is due to past conduct, and that Karma is just one mode of conditionality. Some of the pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral feelings that arise are due to modes of conditionality that include the physical inorganic (Utu Niyama), the biological (Bija Niyama), and the non-volitional mental (Mano Niyama).
This week we will focus on the Karma Niyama and Dharma Niyama. In the Karma Niyama we learn that our deliberate, intentional, behaviors of body, speech, and mind, will have a direct impact on our ethical character, for better or worse. These behaviors will also affect our relationships with others and the world around us. The Dharma Niyama, which remains mysterious and unclear, can be thought of as the principle that governs spiritual growth. It’s the conditioned process by which one develops into an awakened being.
Join us, as we explore together how working intentionally with the Karma Niyama, in beneficial ways, can help us not only transcend our suffering, but also has beneficial effects for the beings around us. We will see if we can bring these concepts to our personal experience and our own intentional actions.
All are welcome!
